Pressure Swing Adsorption (PSA) is the technology that’s widely used in the purification of gases such as hydrogen, carbon dioxide and methane as well as the production of nitrogen and oxygen.

Our application for the PSA technology ensures that compressed air is converted to a mixture of pure nitrogen with a purity of up to ± 99.9997%, with 99% being the standard.
The exact purity can be adjusted on the specific requirements of each application application.
The required compressed air is supplied by an air compressor, which can either delivered by Presscon or provided by the customer according to the system capacity requirements.

The separation of nitrogen and oxygen from air takes place in the unit canisters/cylinders filled with carbon molecular sieve (CMS).

The specific CMS used allows a faster diffusion of the oxygen molecules into the CMS pore structure that it does for the nitrogen molecules.

A typical system use 2 identical adsorber cylinders which get alternately pressurised/depressurised during each process cycle.

The PSA process cycle consists of two key steps:

    • Adsorption/Pressurisation;
    • Desorption/Depressurisation

The cycle unfolds as follows: the 1st PSA cylinder gets pressurised with compressed air; While this happens, the oxygen, carbon dioxide and moisture are adsorbed by the CMS in the first cylinder, while the nitrogen flows through to the top valves which are connected to the main nitrogen delivery piping as well as to the other PSA cylinder.
During this production step, a small amount from the produced nitrogen is routed through the top valves into the 2nd PSA cylinder in order to flush the oxygen retained in the 2nd PSA cylinder during the previous cycle.
After the completion of absorption in the 1st cilinder (40 second/turn), the desorption step begins and the 2nd cylinder begins the absorption step.

On the basis of the PSA technique PRESSCON has developed its own system that eliminates the disadvantages of the conventional PSA systems.
Some of the distinctive improvements brought on by the HPSA technology are:

    • Unique compression cylinders with optimised air circulation;
    • Highly efficient manifold design;
    • Internal spring principle so that CMS can not move;
    • Lower CMS degradation than other PSA systems;
    • Internal alufilter for filtration and a lower dew point;
    • Modular design that facilitates maintenance & subcomponent replacements without production stoppage.
